Books on Board! A New Chapter Begins on Goshen School Buses

At Young Readers Outreach, we love surprising young minds with stories in unexpected places. At laundromats? Yes! Grocery stores? Absolutely! On a school bus? That’s the newest stop on our reading journey.

We’re thrilled to roll out our next big adventure in reading: Books on Board. Thanks to a new collaboration with the Goshen Central School District Department of Transportation and Young Readers Outreach, students will soon find books on their rides to school and on their way back home.

Hop on the bus, grab a book from the onboard library pouch, and dive in! It’s that easy! Whether you're on the way to school or heading home, there’s a story waiting. Love the book? Take it with you and finish it at home. Once you're done, bring it back and pick out something new. Want to trade one for another? Go for it. The best stories are often the ones passed from one friend to another.

Books on Board is inspired by the Little Free Library movement. It’s about making reading easy, spontaneous, and joyful by placing books where kids already are. It can start in the rumble of a bus engine and end in an imaginary world.

Thanks to the suport of a generous corporate sponsor through Benevity Causes, we’re hitting the ground running (or rolling, rather). This funding helps us launch the program and stock the buses with great reads. We thank our Orange County community that continues to show support through book donations, and we’ll keep collecting throughout the winter.

The Goshen Central School District Transportation Department is working closely with Young Readers Outreach to coordinate the final details of this meaningful initiative. Our youth leadership team is also curating a thoughtful, age-friendly book list to make every ride feel like the start of a new story.

Stay tuned for updates coming soon.
